Starting Education Muhurat Dates 2026 — month by month विद्यारम्भ
Every starting education date in 2026 that clears the classical panchang tests — 27 in total, grouped by month. The rules being applied, and the reasoning behind them, are set out on the Starting Education muhurat hub.
Vidyarambha is the formal beginning of learning — classically the day a child first writes a letter, in practice the day a course, a school year or a serious study project starts. Its calendar has one dominant day: Vasant Panchami, the fifth tithi of the waxing fortnight of Magha, sacred to Saraswati and treated as auspicious for this act whether or not the rest of the panchang cooperates. Outside it, the rite wants Mercury's day for intellect and Jupiter's for the teacher, with the light and gentle stars — Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta and Revati — carrying the nakshatra weight. Shravana is worth naming: it is literally the star of listening, and it is the classical choice for beginning any recitation or oral study.

These are panchang-shortlisted dates, not a personal verdict. Each date below clears the classical tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana tests for this occasion, computed with a Lahiri sidereal ephemeris at New Delhi sunrise. The lagna rising at the hour you actually choose, your own birth chart (Chandra bala, running dasha, any dosha) and the day’s Rahu Kaal are NOT checked here — that layer only exists once a date is run against a real chart on the muhurat finder or with Soma.

No qualifying date falls in November, December — those months are closed for this occasion by the bars described above, not by a shortage of candidates.
What 2026 actually looks like for starting education
The 365-day scan of 2026 produces 27 dates for starting education — 13 rated Excellent and 14 rated Good — spread across 10 of the twelve months. The first falls on 25 January 2026 (Shukla Saptami, Revati) and the last on 12 October 2026 (Shukla Dvitiya, Swati). 2027 yields 29, so 2026 is the less open of the two by 2 dates. The difference is not preference: it is where that year's barred solar months, combustion windows and lunar boundaries happen to fall.
September is the richest month of 2026 for this act with 5 dates, and October the thinnest open month with 1. 2 months of this year — Nov, Dec — carry no qualifying date at all, and the table below names the bar that was doing most of the work in each.
This occasion carries no solar-month bar and no combustion bar, so nothing closes a whole season of 2026 at once. What thins the list instead is the day-level tests, whose 2026 tally is in the table below.
| Month | Dates | If none, what shut it |
|---|---|---|
| January | 2 | — |
| February | 2 | — |
| March | 3 | — |
| April | 4 | — |
| May | 2 | — |
| June | 2 | — |
| July | 3 | — |
| August | 3 | — |
| September | 5 | — |
| October | 1 | — |
| November | 0 | mostly wrong fortnight |
| December | 0 | mostly wrong fortnight |
The longest run of 2026 with no qualifying date in it is 80 days, from 12 October 2026 to 31 December 2026. If your own window falls inside it, the honest answer is that this year has nothing to offer there and the adjacent year is the place to look.
Which stars and weekdays carried 2026's dates
The shortlist above is not spread evenly. These are the actual counts from 2026's own qualifying set — a different set from the adjacent year's, so a star that dominates one year can be almost absent in the next simply because of where the Moon's returns fall against the barred windows.
Stars carrying the most dates: Hasta (4×), Chitra (3×), Swati (3×), Revati (2×), Mrigashira (2×), and 8 more.
Weekdays: Wednesday (8×), Thursday (7×), Monday (6×), Sunday (4×), Friday (2×).
Tithis: Saptami (5×), Trayodashi (4×), Dvitiya (4×), Dashami (3×), Tritiya (3×), and 6 more.
All 11 of this act's favoured stars carried at least one date in 2026, which is unusual: in most years two or three of them fall only on days some other test has already closed.
Why the other 338 days of 2026 did not make the list
Nothing above is a shortage of data: every rejected day was rejected by a named classical test, and in 2026 the single biggest was wrong fortnight, which alone accounted for 185 days — 50.7% of the year, ahead of barred nitya yoga on 37. The tests themselves are set out on the Starting Education hub; the tally below is 2026's alone, because the bars sit on different dates each year.
| Reason | Days | Share of the year |
|---|---|---|
| wrong fortnight | 185 | 50.7% |
| barred nitya yoga | 37 | 10.1% |
| Rikta tithi | 36 | 9.9% |
| barred nakshatra | 29 | 7.9% |
| barred weekday | 24 | 6.6% |
| Vishti (Bhadra) karana | 18 | 4.9% |
| scored below the Good bar | 9 | 2.5% |
Where 2026's starting education dates part company with the neighbouring rites
Adjacent rites share most of their classical tests, so their shortlists overlap; the same 365 sunrises were therefore scored a second time against each neighbour's own profile, and every difference below carries that rite's own reason.

Of the 3 rites compared, Joining a New Job's 2026 calendar sits furthest from this one — 32 days on which exactly one of the two is open — and Annaprashan's closest, at 2. If one visit is to carry two of these rites, the shared column is where a day that serves both will be.
What is the difference between vidyarambha and upanayana?
Vidyarambha is the first contact with letters; upanayana is the initiation that historically began Vedic study proper, and carries the sacred thread and the Gayatri mantra with it. They are separated by several years and have quite different rules — upanayana requires Jupiter to be visible, for instance, and vidyarambha does not.
Frequently asked questions about starting education in 2026
How many starting education dates are there in 2026?
27 — 13 rated Excellent and 14 rated Good, out of 365 days scored. They fall across 10 of the twelve months, the first on 25 January 2026 and the last on 12 October 2026. September is the richest single month with 5.
Is Vasant Panchami really better than a technically stronger date?
For this act, yes — it is one of the days the tradition treats as auspicious in itself, and it is specifically Saraswati's. Where a family has flexibility, Vasant Panchami is chosen even over a day that scores higher on the general tests. Where it falls badly against a school calendar, any of the listed dates serves.
Can the same 2026 date serve both starting education and joining a new job?
Usually, but not always. Of the 53 joining a new job dates in 2026, 24 are also on this page; 3 days are open for starting education and shut for joining a new job, and 29 the other way round. 25 June 2026 is a starting education date and not a joining a new job one, because there 5/10 there — Swati is not one of its stars, while 1 January 2026 is the reverse — good for joining a new job, omitted here because 5/10 there — Rohini is not one of its stars. Both lists are scored from the same sunrises, so a date on both has cleared both sets of bars — what neither list can tell you is whether one day can carry two rites in your family's practice, which is a question for the priest conducting them.

How these starting education dates were computed
For 2026 specifically that meant scoring 365 sunrises and keeping 27 of them, with wrong fortnight doing the most work of any single bar — 185 days of 2026. The earliest date it left standing is 25 January 2026 and the latest 12 October 2026. Nothing dropped is left implicit: the reason for each rejection is named in the tally above.
Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are read at sunrise in New Delhi from a Lahiri sidereal ephemeris; the Sun's sidereal sign drives the solar-month exclusions and the Sun–Venus and Sun–Jupiter separations drive the asta (combustion) bars.
The tests are Starting Education's own, listed in full on the Starting Education hub: 11 of the twenty-seven nakshatras carry its star bonus, 9 of the fifteen tithis its tithi bonus, and 4 weekday lords its weekday bonus. Across 2026's 365 sunrises those three were met on 147, 220 and 209 days, and 27 days cleared every bar and still scored 6 or better. Beyond the bars every act on this site carries, starting education additionally rules out the waning fortnight outright and Tuesday and Saturday as weekdays. Where a family practice differs from what is written here, the family practice governs.
