Upanayana Muhurat 2026 उपनयन
The sacred thread ceremony is the most seasonally constrained rite in this list. Upanayana belongs to Uttarayana — the Sun's northward half of the year, from its entry into Capricorn to its entry into Cancer — and within that, the texts name Magha, Phalguna, Chaitra, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha as the months in which it should be performed. That is a window of roughly mid-January to mid-June, and everything outside it is closed. It shares the wedding's requirement that Jupiter be visible: Guru asta cancels an upanayana date outright, because the rite hands a boy over to a teacher and Jupiter is the teacher.
Within the window the tests are recognisable. The waxing fortnight is preferred, Rikta tithis are out, and the favoured stars are the light and gentle ones — Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Uttara Ashadha and Revati. Age is prescribed as well: the eighth year from conception is the classical standard, with the eleventh and twelfth also named, and the rite has historically been treated as time-barred beyond sixteen. Families now vary widely on all of this, and the family's own tradition outranks a general calendar every time.

Frequently asked questions
Why must Jupiter be visible for an upanayana?
Because the rite is the formal acceptance of a teacher, and Jupiter is the graha of the teacher. When Jupiter is combust — too close to the Sun to be seen, which happens for several weeks roughly once a year — the classical reading is that the guru is absent from the sky at the moment you are asking for a guru. It is the same logic that bars weddings during Shukra asta.
Can an upanayana be held in Dakshinayana if the family has no choice?
Some traditions permit it with additional prayaschitta, and some regional practices are markedly more relaxed than the northern norm. But the Uttarayana preference is strong and near-universal in the texts, which is why this page shows nothing in the second half of the year. If your family tradition allows an exception, its priest should set the date rather than a calendar.
Is the mundan performed at the same time?
Traditionally yes — a tonsure is part of the upanayana sequence, which is one reason a delayed childhood mundan is often simply folded into this ceremony. Where the mundan was performed at the classical age, the upanayana tonsure is generally observed symbolically.
