Vidyarambha is the formal beginning of learning — classically the day a child first writes a letter, in practice the day a course, a school year or a serious study project starts. Its calendar has one dominant day: Vasant Panchami, the fifth tithi of the waxing fortnight of Magha, sacred to Saraswati and treated as auspicious for this act whether or not the rest of the panchang cooperates. Outside it, the rite wants Mercury's day for intellect and Jupiter's for the teacher, with the light and gentle stars — Ashwini, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta and Revati — carrying the nakshatra weight. Shravana is worth naming: it is literally the star of listening, and it is the classical choice for beginning any recitation or oral study.
Two rules distinguish this from the other child samskaras. First, the waxing fortnight is close to required, since learning is an accumulation. Second, Tuesday and Saturday are avoided: Mars makes a student combative and Saturn makes the beginning heavy, and neither is what you want on a first day. The classical age for the rite is around five, but the same tests apply perfectly well to an adult starting a degree — the act being timed is the beginning of study, not the age of the student.

Frequently asked questions
Is Vasant Panchami really better than a technically stronger date?
For this act, yes — it is one of the days the tradition treats as auspicious in itself, and it is specifically Saraswati's. Where a family has flexibility, Vasant Panchami is chosen even over a day that scores higher on the general tests. Where it falls badly against a school calendar, any of the listed dates serves.
Does this apply to adults starting a course?
It does. The samskara is described for a child because that is when it historically occurred, but the timing logic is about the beginning of study rather than about childhood. An adult beginning a degree, a language, or a formal sadhana uses the same nakshatras and the same weekday preferences.
What is the difference between vidyarambha and upanayana?
Vidyarambha is the first contact with letters; upanayana is the initiation that historically began Vedic study proper, and carries the sacred thread and the Gayatri mantra with it. They are separated by several years and have quite different rules — upanayana requires Jupiter to be visible, for instance, and vidyarambha does not.
