Buying gold has the tightest and most recognisable timing rules of any act on this site, because three named days dominate it. Akshaya Tritiya — the third tithi of the waxing fortnight of Vaishakha — is the strongest, its name meaning "that which never diminishes". Dhanteras, the thirteenth of the waning fortnight of Kartika, is the second. And Pushya, the eighth nakshatra, is the third and the only one that comes round every month: Guru Pushya when it lands on a Thursday, Ravi Pushya on a Sunday. Between them these account for most of India's retail gold in any given year.
The general rules behind those named days are simple enough to state. Friday belongs to Venus, karaka of ornament and luxury, and Thursday to Jupiter, karaka of accumulated wealth — those two weekdays carry the act. Rikta tithis and Amavasya are dropped, as they are for every acquisition. What the classical texts do not do, and neither do we, is comment on price: a muhurat concerns the fitness of a moment for an act, and says nothing whatsoever about whether the metal is expensive that week.

Frequently asked questions
What makes Akshaya Tritiya different from any other good tithi?
It is one of the small set of days classed as swayamsiddha — self-perfected — meaning the whole day is treated as an auspicious muhurat without needing the usual tithi, nakshatra and yoga tests to align. Akshaya means undiminishing, so acquisitions made on it are held to persist. It falls on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, generally in late April or May.
Is Guru Pushya better than Ravi Pushya?
They are considered comparable, with a slight edge usually given to Guru Pushya because Jupiter both rules wealth and is exalted in relation to Pushya's natural significations. Ravi Pushya, the Sunday version, is favoured where the purchase is for the household rather than for investment. Both occur only a handful of times a year and both appear in the table below when they fall.
Does buying on a good muhurat mean I will not lose money on gold?
No. Nothing in the muhurat literature makes a claim about price movement, and neither do we. What the tradition holds is that the acquisition is well-placed — that it persists and is not lost or disputed. Investment outcomes depend on the market, and no timing system on this site should be read as advice about them.
