Godh bharai is the household form of Simantonnayana, the samskara performed in the later months of pregnancy — the fifth, seventh or eighth, with odd months preferred and the seventh most common. The classical marker is not a calendar date at all but a physical one: the rite is held after the mother has felt the child move. Everything about its timing follows from wanting a gentle, unhurried day. Soft and movable nakshatras are chosen — Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha and Revati — and Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday carry it, with Tuesday and Saturday set aside.
The waxing fortnight is preferred for the obvious reason that the rite marks a growing thing, and the sharp and fierce stars are barred more firmly here than in most places, since nothing about this occasion wants an edge. Two further exclusions are worth stating: eclipse days are avoided outright by almost every family tradition regardless of what the tithi says, and the mother's own comfort on the day outranks every classical consideration on this page. Where the pregnancy is being medically monitored, the obstetrician's calendar comes first and the muhurat is fitted around it.

Fifth, seventh or eighth month — which is correct?
All three are named in the texts, with odd months generally preferred and the seventh being the most widely observed. Some traditions specify the fifth for a first child. The operative classical condition is that the rite follows the quickening — the point at which foetal movement is felt — rather than a fixed week count.
Do families really avoid eclipse days for this?
Yes, and more strictly than for most occasions. The traditional caution around eclipses and pregnancy is one of the most widely observed customs in India, well beyond households that otherwise follow muhurat closely. We do not compute eclipse windows on this page, so check any date you shortlist against an eclipse calendar for that year before fixing it.
Is Simantonnayana the same rite as a modern baby shower?
They have merged in practice. The samskara is a prescribed ritual with mantras, performed for the mother and the unborn child; the baby shower is the celebration that has grown around it. The timing rules on this page belong to the samskara, and families holding only the celebration typically follow them loosely or not at all.
