Because the venture is bound to a physical premises it wants some of the permanence that a purely digital launch does not: Anuradha and Vishakha, the stars of steady patronage and of sustained effort, join the swift trading stars Ashwini, Pushya and Hasta at the top of the list. Thursday and Friday carry the act, for Jupiter's expansion and Venus's flow of custom, with Wednesday close behind for Mercury's ordinary commerce. The waxing fortnight is required, Rikta tithis and Amavasya are dropped, and Vishti karana bars the day outright.
The hour is where a retail opening genuinely differs from an online one, because the first customer is a real event you can schedule. Classical practice puts the first sale inside a Labh or Amrit Choghadiya, and many shopkeepers hold the ribbon until then even when the puja finished earlier. Diwali sits at the centre of the retail year for the same reason: the Lakshmi Puja on Amavasya is an exception to the usual bar on that tithi, because the day is worshipping the deity of wealth rather than beginning an ordinary act — but a new shop should still open on one of the surrounding clean days rather than on the new moon itself.

Is the puja or the first sale the moment being timed?
The first sale. The puja consecrates the premises and can be held earlier in the day; the classical Sthapana is the moment the shop begins functioning as a shop, which is when money first changes hands. Shopkeepers who hold the first transaction for a Labh Choghadiya are following exactly this distinction.
Why does Diwali not appear as the top date if it is the retail new year?
Because Lakshmi Puja falls on Amavasya, which is barred for beginnings. The tradition treats the puja itself as an exception — worship of the wealth deity on the new moon — without extending that exception to opening a new establishment. The days around it, particularly Dhanteras and the Pratipada that follows Amavasya, are the ones a new shop actually uses.
Does vastu of the premises change the date?
Not the date, but it changes the sequence of the opening and where the first puja is performed. Vastu concerns the orientation of the entrance, the placement of the cash box and the direction the shopkeeper faces — a separate layer entirely from the panchang, and one this page does not attempt to cover.
