Amrit Kaal and Varjyam: the nectar window and its twin

A lunar window, not a solar one
Almost every daily window people know is anchored to the Sun. Rahu Kaal, Abhijit, Gulika and the Choghadiya all divide the span between sunrise and sunset, so they move slowly and predictably. Amrit Kaal is built differently: it is derived from the nakshatra the Moon occupies, and it therefore starts wherever that nakshatra’s own internal clock says it should — sometimes before dawn, sometimes at three in the afternoon, sometimes not within the calendar day at all.
The mechanism is a table of ghatikas. Each of the twenty-seven nakshatras is assigned an offset measured from the moment the Moon enters it, and that offset marks a specific portion of the star’s span. One such portion is called Varjyam or Tyajyam — the part to be abandoned — and another is Amrit Kaal, the nectar portion. Both are read off the same per-nakshatra table, which is why an almanac that prints one almost always prints the other.
Because the Moon does not move at a constant speed, the window is not a constant length either. A nakshatra can take anywhere from about twenty to about twenty-six hours to cross, and the portions inside it stretch and compress in proportion. A published Amrit Kaal of an hour and a half on one day and an hour and fifty minutes on the next is not an inconsistency; it is the Moon’s velocity showing through.
Varjyam, the twin nobody advertises
Varjyam is the more consequential of the pair in daily practice, and it is the one most people have never heard of. It marks a portion of the nakshatra classically set aside — journeys are not begun in it, and important acts are moved out of it, in the same spirit as Rahu Kaal but on a lunar rather than a solar rhythm. Because it is derived per-nakshatra, it can land anywhere in the twenty-four hours and can occasionally straddle midnight.
The relationship between the two windows is where traditions part company. Several South Indian almanacs place Amrit Kaal at a fixed remove from Varjyam within the same nakshatra, effectively deriving one from the other; others compute both independently from the ghatika table and occasionally publish figures that do not line up. If you compare a Telugu panchangam with a Marathi one on the same date, expect the Varjyam to broadly agree and the Amrit Kaal to differ by more than you would like.
This site does not publish an Amrit Kaal, and the reason is that honesty is cheaper than a plausible number. Doing it properly needs the exact moment the Moon entered the nakshatra, the ghatika offsets in the lineage you actually follow, and a decision about which of the competing derivations to trust. We would rather point you at the windows we compute exactly than add one we would have to hedge.
How it sits against the other daily windows
Setting the daily windows side by side makes their different natures obvious, and makes it clear why they cannot be ranked against one another on a single scale. Two are solar, two are lunar, and one is a devotional period rather than an electional one.

Brahma Muhurta is included because people meet it in the same tables, but it belongs to daily discipline rather than to electional timing — no muhurat is chosen because it falls there.
Reading a published Amrit Kaal sensibly
If your almanac prints one, use it the way it is meant: as a favourable portion inside a day whose suitability has already been settled by tithi, nakshatra and the rest. It is not a rescue window. An Amrit Kaal inside a Rikta tithi, or inside a barred solar month, does not make that day usable for a rite that the month has closed.
Check the reference location before you trust the clock times. Because the window depends on the moment the Moon changed nakshatra, it is far less sensitive to your longitude than a sunrise-anchored window is — but the panchangam still reports it in the time zone and reckoning of the place it was computed for, and cross-border readers routinely take a Chennai figure into a different zone without adjusting it.
Finally, treat disagreement between sources as information rather than error. When two respected almanacs differ on Amrit Kaal by half an hour, that is a genuine difference of lineage, and the right response is to follow the one your family follows rather than to average them.
The deeper point behind that advice is that the lunar windows behave differently from the solar ones in a way worth internalising. Sunrise-anchored periods drift slowly, predictably and by small amounts, so a stale table stays approximately right. Nakshatra-anchored periods do not: they can move by many hours from one day to the next, and there is no mental shortcut that will let you estimate them. Either you have a computed figure for the date in question, or you do not have one at all.

Why do two almanacs print different Amrit Kaal times for the same date?
Because the derivation genuinely differs between lineages. Some compute the window directly from a per-nakshatra ghatika table, while others place it at a set remove from Varjyam in the same star, and the underlying tables themselves vary slightly between regional traditions. The moment the Moon entered the nakshatra also has to be computed precisely, and small differences there move both windows.
Does Amrit Kaal outrank Rahu Kaal if the two overlap?
The usual practice is that the caution wins, as it does for Choghadiya. The two are derived from unrelated systems — one from the Moon’s star, the other from an eightfold division of daylight — so an overlap is coincidence rather than contradiction, and most families simply take the portion of the nectar window that falls outside the barred one.
